Hi There,
Often times, after having an interview and getting a great vibe from your interview panel, you often wonder what questions are appropriate to ask when someone on the panel asks you “Do you have any questions for us?”
Note that most times, the interviewer is not done evaluating you at the point where they ask you this question. The questions you ask during the interview often reveal your priorities in a way that no other question does during the interview.
This post highlights the top 5 questions that you should not ask, when the question is thrown at you.
1.“What is the salary for this position?”
During a first time interview, it is inappropriate for you to bring up salary related issues, time off or other benefits. Otherwise, it would give the panel the impression that you only care about the compensations.
2.“So when do I start?”
Avoid asking questions that make it seem like you have made the decision for the interview panel about the job status. Most times, getting the job is majorly about the chemistry between you and your interviewer. Other questions you should avoid are:
- “Was I the best of all the candidates interviewed?”
- “Can I add you on Facebook?”
- “What are the perks the company offers us employees, compared to the competition?”
- “Would I get an office to myself alongside this position?”
- “How quickly would I get promoted?”
3. “Can you tell me what this company does?”
This is the absolute worst question a candidate can ask their interviewer at the interview panel. It shows the employer that you did not research about the company, and you are only interested in the monthly paychecks. Also, ensure you do not ask about anything you could find on the company’s website or social media outlets or by simply searching the Internet.
4. “Will I have to pass a drug test or background check?”
Asking this question makes it seem like you have something to hide. The answer to this question is usually almost yes, so why bother asking the question in the first place?
5. “Could I work from home one day a week?”
Avoid asking questions that involve altering or changing your work conditions right away. Same goes for questions that involve your job duties. If they end up liking you, they could make accommodations for you; but wait until they show you this by extending an offer. Basically, trying to alter the job description on your first interview is the fastest way to get your resumé in the shredder.
