10 Steps To Take To Turn Your Internship Position Into A Permanent Position (Part II)

Today, we would be concluding our two-part series on ‘How To ‘ . Yesterday we highlighted 5 out of the 10 tips to take to turn that internship position into an opportunity and become a full time staff at the company where you intern. Let’s go ahead and highlight the next five steps to take.

#6 Feel Free To Ask Questions

As an intern, you can ask any question from anybody at the organization concerning work related topics, and most of the time they would be more than willing to assist you and help you answer your question. Some people even go as far as ensuring they put you through the whole process. Truth be told, you only get this privilege as an intern. Once you become a permanent staff, every one just either assumes you should know what to do on the job without being told, or you should have taken the initiative to research. Either way, it is more difficult to learn as a permanent staff at an organization than an intern. Seize that opportunity daily and use it to your advantage.

#7 Let Them Know You Are Interested In Working There

Funny as this may seem, most interns usually assume that the employers or supervisors should know that they are interested in working at the organization. Meanwhile, most supervisors have the mindset that an intern would not only show interest in becoming a permanent staff by doing the right things in an effective manner while on the job, but by also vocalizing it. This way, most interns often lose their opportunity simply because they did not inform their superiors about their interest. Tragic. Managers LOVE to hire employees who really want the jobs that are currently available.

#8 Be An Asset To The Company

You could achieve this by simply setting goals and milestones for yourself while on the internship. You do not need to flaunt your achievements in your superior or co-workers faces, as this might come across as cocky and unprofessional. This is nit what you want, as this could make you lose the opportunity at getting that job. Rather, set realistic career goals for yourself within your capabilities, and be the very best at what you do. That way, your managers and co-workers see you as an asset to the company that they are willing to keep and invest in.

#9 Do Not Shy Away From Feedback

As important as this point is, you need to be able to decipher between constructive criticism from a superior or co-worker and criticism that is genuinely baseless. There would be a high probability that during your internship, on more than one case would you be criticized by a co-worker. After receiving either type of feedback, take time out to process the information in tandem with the steps you took while trying to achieve that goal. Analyze the situation logically and take mental notes on what you would do differently if you have to be in the same position over again. It helps to detach yourself from the situation and analyze the whole process in third party. This way, you have an unbiased view and would most likely be objective with your analysis.

#10 Have A Meeting With Your Superiors

Towards the end of your internship, you could take the initiative to schedule a meeting with your superiors to give a detailed and genuine report on your performance during the internship. Review your accomplishments that you have worked on, and feel free to pitch them when you get the opportunity to. Ensure you do not do this in a forceful way, but in a way that buttresses their points as to why you should be offered a permanent position at their company.

You should also express your gratitude for the opportunity to intern at the organization and reassure them that you would continue to be that smart, hard worker when you join the company as a full time employee.
