Do You Want To Advance At Work? If Yes, You Need To Ask Yourself These Questions!

Hey There,

At work, everyone thinks everything is just great with you – and probably can’t get better. You get your work done in time, you meet and surpass targets and your manager thinks your pure gold.

However, deep down inside you, you feel the complete opposite towards your job. Infact, what your manager and co-workers see as supernatural is simply you on auto-pilot, just going through your work day in, day out. Sometimes, that’s just great but other times, you need to check in periodically to confirm that current job is still in line with your career goals. You need to ensure that you do not find yourself in a career rut while you are on “auto-pilot”

You might ask yourself “What is the difference?” These three questions might help you spot the difference. Trust us, you might surprise yourself with the answers.

Is There An Avenue To Grow?

To advance at your workplace could come in various forms, ranging from salary increases to title promotions. This could also be in form of working on new clients and taking up more responsibility. Some us are fortunate enough to work at corporations that encourage such opportunities, while some of us aren’t just as lucky. However, when the opportunities are not there, you care less, and when you care less, you stop improving on yourself. Find a way to consciously make sure that lack of opportunities at your office doesn’t lead to a career rut for you.

Are There New Challenges To Seek?

When there are opportunities at your place of work, do you find yourself being neutral about acting on them? The main question here is “Why don’t you feel the need to challenge yourself?” Do you have a lot going on in your personal life and need to coast for a little bit? Are you uninspired by the company mission and no longer motivated to do more to support it? Do you even want to be doing the job you’re doing anymore?

Only you know the answers to these questions. But if the thought of taking on additional responsibilities, or even adjusting your current ones so that you feel challenged, makes you grimace, then you’re probably not feeling the job as much as you once did.

Does Time Pass By?

While I’m certainly not recommending you should be working round the clock, we all know how great it is when we’re excited about what we’re doing: You come into the office, lose track of time, and feel immersed in your work. Sure, there are times when you have to do tasks you don’t love, but getting to the end of the workday doesn’t feel like an eternity when you love your job and the company you’re working for. On the other hand, regularly planning out your day so that you can leave at 5 PM on the dot is a red flag that you’re not as engaged in your work as you once were.
If you answered all these questions with a “Yes!”—that’s awesome! You’re working hard in a role and company that’s well-suited to your passions and goals. However, if you found yourself saying, “no, no, and no,” then it’s probably time to start thinking about your next step. It’s OK to be in a rut, and it’s OK to no longer like where you work (for various reasons). As long as you recognize it and work to fix it, you’re on the right path.
